Sasse College
Proprietors
The religious congregation that founded and has guided Saint Joseph's College Sasse.
Saint Joseph's College Sasse was founded in 1939 by the Mill Hill Missionaries and later entrusted to the Archdiocese of Bamenda. Below is a list of the religious proprietors who have overseen the college.
List of Proprietors
Since the college passed to the local Church, the sitting Bishops of the Diocese of Buea have served as its Proprietors.
1950 – 1962
Bishop Peter Rogan, M.H.M
The Mill Hill Missionaries (Society of St. Joseph of Mill Hill) founded Saint Joseph's College Sasse in 1939, establishing it as the first secondary school in British Southern Cameroons. For decades the Society shaped the college's Catholic identity, academic rigour and missionary spirit, until proprietorship was eventually handed to the local hierarchy of the Catholic Church in Cameroon.
1962 – 1973
Bishop Julius Joseph Willem Peeters, M.H.M.
Bishop Julius Joseph Willem Peeters, M.H.M., succeeded Bishop Peter Rogan and served as Bishop of Buea from 1962 to 1973. A Dutch Mill Hill Missionary, he played an important role in strengthening Catholic education, pastoral work, and Church organization in the Diocese of Buea during the early post-independence years of Cameroon. He promoted parish development, encouraged the formation of parish councils, and contributed significantly to the spiritual and academic growth of institutions such as Saint Joseph’s College Sasse. Under his leadership, the Diocese continued the strong missionary and educational tradition established by the Mill Hill Missionaries.
1973 – 2006
Bishop Pius Suh Awa
Soban #0677 | SOBA 1949
May 4, 1930 - Feb. 9, 2014
Third College Prorietor
First Cameroonian Bishop.
Bishop Pius Suh Awa became the first indigenous Cameroonian Bishop of Buea in 1973, succeeding Bishop Julius Peeters after serving as Coadjutor Bishop from 1971. A former student of Saint Joseph’s College Sasse, he was widely respected for his humility, discipline, pastoral leadership, and commitment to Catholic education. During his long episcopacy, he strengthened the local Church, promoted vocations, supported Catholic schools, and helped expand the Diocese through evangelization and institutional development. He also founded the Congregation of the Brothers of St. Martin De Porres in Buea in 1985. Bishop Awa remains one of the most influential Catholic leaders in the history of the Church in Cameroon and an enduring inspiration to the Sasse community.
2006 – 2019
Bishop Immanuel Bushu
Bishop Immanuel Bushu served as the 4th Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Buea — and therefore as Proprietor of Saint Joseph's College Sasse — from his installation at Buea on 30 January 2007 until his retirement on 28 December 2019. Before being transferred to Buea by Pope Benedict XVI in November 2006, he served as the first Bishop of the Diocese of Yagoua (1992–2006).
2021 – Present
Bishop Michael Miabesue Bibi
